About Women

Sports are sexist not because of the way actual sports are structured, rather sports are sexist because of the way sports institutions were set up. A simple lesson in sports fundamentals, history, and capitalism explain why there is sexism in sports and therefore what sorts of effect the sports world has on sexism in general society.

I am in no way shape or form denying sexism in sports or sexism in general. While his methodology and explanations are weak and paltry, the sexism in sports he seeks to find is something even a casual sports fan such as myself can observe.

This essay does not seek to disprove sexism just the way that this particular researcher has decided to frame the issue. There are a variety of issues with the way that Messner conducts his study of sports that reveal a lack of understanding the fundamental nature of the sports he studied. The problem with using averages is that it does not account for outliers like Martina Navratilovaa female tennis player who played until she was forty-nine years old.

In tennis sports players can play and return to the sport at later ages, throwing off poor statistical tools like the average and revealing a lack of understanding of the sport he is studying. Throughout the study Messner claims that women can participate in sports the same way men can and for the large part he is absolutely correct.

However one of the sports that Messner chooses to study basketball to gauge sexism in sports is highly dependent on the only athletically relevant physiological difference between men and women: In other sports, height matters a lot less and thus one could definitely claim that women can compete on the same level as men.

However, in a sport such as basketball the average height difference between men and women makes a tremendous difference. If you add five and a half more inches you move on to the second smallest player on the court, the shooting guard.

Add five and a half more inches you get the average height of a power forward, the second tallest player on the court. Add a few more inches and you get usually the tallest player on the court, who plays center.

That is the difference of a few inches in basketball. Take the athletes pictured above, Kobe Bryant and Lisa Leslie. Both stand at a tall six feet six inches and both are dominating players in their respective leagues. Juxtapose that with the fact that the first dunk in the WNBA happened only four years ago.

One simply has to look at the origins of sports institutions to understand why sports seems to favor men over women. Generally speaking, sports institutions for men have been in place longer than sports institutions have been in place for women.

This plays into a huge advantage institutionally for men because of the benefits that having established institutions bring. The longevity of institutions allows for a larger fan base. The longevity of an institutions allows for more fans as more people are born and allows for the establishment of teams as part of a tradition amongst sports fans.

More fans translates to more money whether that means more valuable television rights, merchandise and tickets. The more fervent and developed fan bases only contributes to a more steady stream of revenue. The amount of revenue affects a variety of other aspects about the sports, contributing to a biased sports system that favors men over women.

The amount of capital going in to male sports creates an incentive so that the best coaches, administrators, minds, and general talent that get involved in sports enter the market of male sports.
